Mohs Surgery is a surgical technique for treatment of skin cancers.
Mohs Surgery is the most common solution for skin cancer treatment. The surgery gets its name from its developer Mr. Frederick Mohs, who devised this technique in the 1930s. Today, Mohs surgery is known to be the most effective technique for basal cell carcinoma treatment and squamous cell carcinoma treatment – the two most common skin cancer types.
During this procedure, cancer cells present in the skin are removed progressively and continuously tested till a healthy tissue is found. The precision of the procedure ensures minimal damage to healthy skin cells around the affected areas. Surgeons are able to achieve cancer free margins with this technique and thus, it is considered an effective treatment for recurrent skin cancers.
Mohs is the best treatment for skin cancer as it is known to treat many types of cancers and minimize reoccurrence as well. Skin cancer is usually caused due to excessive sun exposure. Nearly 90% of skin cancers are found on areas of the body exposed to the sun for most of the time. If you notice any difference in your skin colour or texture for a long time, it might be best to visit a skin specialist before it is too late.
Mohs surgery is recommended in the following cases:
If you are on any blood-thinning medication, it is important to notify your doctor beforehand or else it can result in excessive bleeding during your surgery. You should avoid alcohol and smoking at least 2-3 days before your surgery as it can severely affect the outcome of the surgery. Wear loose clothing in the affected area during your surgery. If the surgery is on your face, avoid any kind of make-up or lotion. The doctor might also give you certain instructions and prescribe some medications that must be taken before the procedure.
Mohs surgery is normally performed under an injected local anaesthesia that is given as an outpatient procedure. Doctors numb your skin so that you don’t feel the pain of the surgery. The surgery can last from 4 to 6 hours, based on the size of the tumour. The surgeon will mark the affected area and sterilize it. He will then remove one layer at a time using a scalpel. Every tissue layer is stained and examined for cancerous cells under a microscope. One by one, tissue layers are removed until the doctor finds a layer of healthy tissue without any sign of cancer. Thus, only the affected tissues are removed in this procedure and healthy tissue is spared. The surgeon will then close the wound with stitches. Normally, the wound gets repaired on its own in a few days.
Usually, the pain is minimal in the case of Mohs surgery. Patients should avoid any strenuous activity for at least a week post the operation. In case the patient notices increased tenderness for many days, fever or yellow drainage from the wound, they should contact their surgeon immediately. If the tumour was large and aggressive, the patient may require a reconstructive repair of the wound. Patients also need to follow-up and ensure that the wound is healing properly. The recovery time in Mohs surgery is largely dependent on the size of the tumour and its location on the body.
